China Sanctions US Weapons Giants Lockheed, Raytheon, Over Balloon Response

In what is being deemed a largely political stunt, Chinese trade authorities have listed Lockheed Martin Corp. and a subsidiary of Raytheon Technologies Corp. under the “unreliable entities” list—the Chinese equivalent of America’s sanctioned entities list.

The judgment was made based on Lockheed Martin and Raytheon’s close partnership with the US government in the continually-enlarging arms sales to Taiwan.

A fine was issued amounting to twice the value of all the arms sales contracts awarded to the US weapons giants related to Taiwan since 2020. The fines are expected to be paid in 15 days, or further sanctioning will take place.

The sanctions were announced on Wednesday by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Wenbin, in response to the shooting down of the suspected spy balloon, and the sanctioning of 6 Chinese tech firms related to a theorized global spy balloon operation run by Beijing.

Following the shooting down of the balloon, Chinese officials stated they reserved the right to inflict appropriate counter measures.

Regarding Taiwan, the vast majority of nations recognize that Taiwan is a renegade province of China, who in turn believes the two must be reunited. Following US President Biden’s significant escalations in the arming of Taiwan, Beijing determined in a recent white paper that reunification must be the nation’s top priority and that force should not be ruled out.

The sanctions are likely not to affect the companies so strongly—they are forbidden by the US government from doing business in China. However, it succinctly illustrates the absurdity of all unilateral economic force imposed around the world.

Stopping to think

Legally a foreign government that has issued a large sanction for strictly-national political reasons, has no authority to issue fines if the company wasn’t under contract.

For this exact reason, America’s sanctioning of all manner of foreign projects has no authority, and should technically inspire no authority.

In 2019, the US government sanctioned PDVSA, the national petroleum company of Venezuela, because the Trump Administration and other politicians besides didn’t agree with the results of the presidential elections in that country.

In November of 2021, the US imposed sanctions on 8 Russian individuals and 17 vessels working to build the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, pursuant to the “Protecting Europe’s Energy Security Act” which was not passed in the European Parliament, but rather in the US Congress. No one in the EU asked the US to protect their energy security by interfering with their decision to work with the Russian Federation to build a gas pipeline to Europe.

Lockheed Martin and Raytheon produce between them the fighter jets and bombs that have been used almost exclusively by Saudi Arabia to conduct the war in Yemen, which created the world’s worst humanitarian disaster, with hundreds of thousands of children under the age of 5 dying from preventable diseases resulting from Saudi Arabia’s war-time decision to blockade the country.

Lockheed Martin and Raytheon deserve to be sanctioned by every nation on Earth, if anything like a rules-based international order exists, and if the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights is to be presumed as valid. WaL
